work conditions

The badlands are generally hot, dry, and sunny during the day. In order to break up the day we both prospect and work on excavations. Excavations often require the use of heavy machinery, sharp tools, etc. for proper removal of specimens. However, day tours will be more focused on observing larger excavations and the demonstration of these tools. A safety overview will still be provided at the beginning of the day.  You must acknowledge the natural dangers of being in a remote, arid environment, (local wildlife, dehydration, severe weather, etc.). Further info can be found in the Sign Up section.

We provide food and cookware, but you are encouraged to bring additional provisions. Most food allergies can be accommodated with advance notice. Contact us if you have any food preference questions. Breakfast is not provided on day tours, but the Marmarth Cafe in which we meet at 9:30 am, is a great breakfast option. Water is provided on site and at camp. We will prepare sack lunches that include chips, granola bar, fruit, vegetable and choice of PBJ or ham/turkey sandwich. Dinner for day tours just so happen to coincide with BBQ days!

At 9:30 am, we will meet you in town at the parking lot of the Marmarth Cafe/Gas Station (101 1st Ave NE Marmarth, ND 58643). From there you will follow us to camp where parking is available for the duration of the tour. High clearance vehicles are not necessary to travel the paved county and dirt farm roads to camp. Transportation is then provided for the tour.

Airport pickup not available for day tours.
